On Friday, April 16, 2004 Drs. Hedvig Hricak and Sara Abramson hosted “Radiology: Giving Back to New York”, a New York City high school science program held in conjunction with the New York Roentgen Society’s annual spring conference. This very successful event, which took place at Rockefeller University, provided an opportunity for professionals involved in clinical radiological practice, research, and industry to convey their excitement about the field to students interested in science or the allied health professions as a career choice.
To participate, students were required to enter an essay contest, “The Expanding Field of Radiology: What Role Do You See for Yourself?” Over 30 students attended from 10 high schools located in all 5 boroughs. They listened to a variety of lectures and took part in a hands-on ultrasound demonstration sponsored by GE. Awards were presented to the winners of the essay contest.
Interested students who attended the event are eligible for summer interships at local academic medical institutions. Drs. Hricak and Abramson look forward to further developing the program for next year so that more NYC high school students can learn about the numerous opportunities in the world of radiology.
